WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR FAMILY PHOTO SHOOT?

Deciding what to wear for your family photo shoot can be just as confusing as finding the right photographer. Your photos are going to hang on your walls for years to come, and so It is a bit overwhelming when considering what you and your family should wear, these tips should help you to pick out the perfect wardrobe for you and your family.

  1.  Consider the time of year

If we are doing your family shoot in the fall, then it would be best to be in colors that coordinate with the trees and landscapes.  I suggest Navy, dark green, burgundy, dark grey and black. If you’re doing a shoot in the spring, then more pastel colors are better, light blue, pale pinks and greens, denim is always good and for the summer I suggest brighter summer colors such as turquoise, pinks, some oranges, etc.

  2.  Colors to avoid

I recommend that everyone stay away from bright reds, oranges, yellows, and no neons. The color cast off of those colors can make for awful skin tones.  Of course, there are exceptions, like for holiday photos such as 4th of July and Christmas.

  3.  Look at your home decor

Is your home full of bright or neutral colors?  Since you are likely to hang these prints in your home, you will want to make sure the colors of your clothes go with your homes color scheme.

  4.  Coordinate your colors – they don’t necessarily have to match

Long gone are the days of everyone wearing a white shirt and matching. Instead, pick a couple of colors and choose clothes that will fit in this color scheme.

  5.  Don’t forget accessories

Accessories are great in photos not only for mom and dad but also for the kiddos. Hats, scarves, a necklace are all great to bring along, even if we don’t end up using all of them. Have the man wear a tie for the woman to hold. Necklaces for the kids to play with or hats to hide behind.

  6.  Limit patterns

My suggestion for this is perhaps Dad in a plaid, and the rest of the family in solid color tops that go with colors of the plaid

  7.  Look for clothing collections

When shopping for clothes for your family, many stores will typically have color coordinating collections. This way you know your colors will coordinate.

  8.  Plan ahead

Once we book your session, start thinking about your wardrobe right away. You may think certain clothes will fit your kids still and then they don’t or that one dress is clean. If you wait until the day of or day before you may run into last-minute stress of having to run out and purchase clothes, or they may need to be pressed or dry cleaned.

  9.  Say no to characters

Yes, your little one may love their Toy Story shirt, but you may want to skip it for the family photo session. Just like patterns, characters on shirts can be pretty distracting.

  10.  Textures are your friend

I am a huge fan of a cotton fitted shirt. However, in photographs, I like to add textures like scarves or belts to add a little more to the image. Don’t shy away from different textures.
